The Big Secret to Spending Less On New Tyres

Drum roll please… the big secret is… to visit your local tyre dealer less often! OK may be it is not the big secret you were expecting, but you can do this by extending the life of your tyres – and getting more miles on each set you buy. Of course it’s impossible to estimate how many miles your tyres will do, because it will depend on a number of factors. What you definitely can do is exceed the expected average. Some of these are within your control – whilst others are not.

Where you live and drive – If you live in a town or city and spend most of your time driving there, your tyres will wear out quicker than if most of your driving is on motorways. If you live in a rural area it will be even worse! A person who drives mainly on motorways could do twice as many miles between tyre changes as someone who spends most of their time driving up and down hills and along winding roads.

The car you drive – Some car tyres are only designed to last up to 10,000 miles (or maybe even less with some models) – whilst others can easily be expected to do more than 30,000 miles before they need replacing. OK you could research average tyre life when buying your car – but not many people do! What you definitely can do is exceed the expected average for your tyres.

Regularly check your tyre pressures – Most people only check their pressures before a long journey or if they “look” low and don’t understand how important the correct tyre pressure is and. If you drive on under or over-inflated tyres, it will have a big effect on how unevenly they wear down.

Consider the way you drive – If you are the kind of person who drives their car quite “hard” – quickly accelerating away from lights and junctions, cornering fast and braking heavily – you will eat your way through tyres. This is especially true for the front tyres. Being conscious of your driving style and calming down a bit can massively improve your tyre life.

Check out any handling problems – If there is any vibration into your hands through the steering wheel – it could be your wheels need balancing. Or, if you notice your car pulling to one side – it may be that your tyres and wheels need adjustment to the tracking. Either problem can cause excessive, uneven wear if left uncorrected. If you notice a vibration after having new tyres fitted, go back to your tyre dealer and ask that they recheck them – for free.

All new tyres should be balanced properly before being fitted. If you notice a vibration after buying new tyres, take your car back to your tyre dealer and ask that they recheck them for free.

Empty out your car – The more “junk” you carry around in your car, the heavier it is – and the quicker your tyres will wear down. You may well have heard about how this can affect your fuel economy, but it also increases the wear of your tyres too. Leaving your roof-box on all year round when you don’t need it – is another, if somewhat surprising, factor too. If you ultimately want to spend less money on new tyres, follow some or all of the tips above to make them last longer – and cover many more miles before they need to be replaced.
