The roar of the engine, the smell of the fuel, the sound of rubber on pavement as the car is pushed to the limit these are all things that ignite our senses when we hear the words muscle car. Americans have been fascinated by these machines that have represented power, strength, and rebellion since their appearance on the dealer’s showroom floors in the mid 60′s. The 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C with 480bhp was often said to have “Too much power”. Its sleek European sports car look set it apart from other muscle cars. Only 2 of these were ever made with the twin turbocharged feature. The first was made for Bill Cosby and the second for Shelby. Bill Cosby sold his and the new owner drove it into a lake. In 2007 the only remaining car was sold for $5.5 million US.

The next car to make our list is the most coveted Corvette of all time. The 1968 L88 Corvette was designed for racing. Developers at GM thought that this car was too much for the road. In an attempt to discourage the average muscle car enthusiast, standard features were not offered. Who needs a radio or AC when you can reach speeds of 170mph?

Famous for its appearances in illegal drag races, the 1969 ZL 1 Camaro is one of the hardest muscle cars to find today. The V-8 engine has an explosive 500 horsepower. The acceleration from 0-60 happens in about 5.3 seconds. This package option was only available for one year so even though the full line was sold, this can be a very hard car to locate.

The final car on our list is the car the average person pictures when they think muscle car. The 1970 Super Sport Package Chevelle with the LS6 features made this car the most powerful stock car the average consumer could get a hold of. The racing stripes and 454 horses caused this car to be coveted by all who knew of its existence.

Muscle cars have changed the way we think about automobiles. After their introduction into American culture driving wasn’t just about getting from place to place.
